1. Poniente de Granada Designation of Origin
This Denomination is one of the most recently created. It was recognised in 2003, although efforts have been made to create it since 1998.
Like any Denomination of Origin, its objective is to defend the unique characteristics of its extra virgin olive oil.
a) The region of Poniente de Granada
Likewise, the Poniente region of Granada is located in the westernmost part of Granada. An area of Granada that stands out for its beautiful mountain ranges, valleys and meadows that make up a landscape of enormous landscape and cultural richness.
The climate of this western part of Granada is continentalised Mediterranean; winters with cold and rainy temperatures; summers warm and dry.
b) Its olive varieties
This Denomination of Origin covers numerous varieties of olives that are cultivated there. The varieties of olives are the following:

2. The best olive oil from Poniente de Granada
The climate of Granada has some spectacular peculiarities due to the proximity of the sea that cushion their winters and summers. Together with its soil characteristics, they make Granda an epectacular terrain for the cultivation and production of olive oils of the highest quality.
In addition, in El Cortijuelo de San Benito we have visited and analysed all the cooperatives and oil mills that are registered in this denomination of Origin and we have selected the cooperative San Francisco de Asís de Montefrio for the good service and its excellent quality in its extra virgin olive oils.
3. Cooperatives of Poniente de Grananada
In this Denomination there are dozens of cooperatives and oil mills that are protected. Among the ones that have shown us the best quality, we have the following:
a) Cooperative of San Francisco de Asís de Montefrio:
This is a fairly large cooperative with almost 2,000 members that grinds around 10 million kilos of oil each year.
This cooperative is also located in Montefrío in Granada. In the heart of the Poniente region of Granada.
This cooperative produces two types of oil, one made from the Picual variety, and the other is a natural blend of the Picudo and Chorreao varieties. Both with this Denomination of Origin and with the Montevilla brand.
4. Where to buy olive oil from Poniente de Granada?
Poniente de Granada Extra Virgin Olive Oil is a fairly recent Denomination and is therefore not yet as well known as others. Therefore, these oils are not easy to find outside of Granada. Even more difficult to find outside of Spain.
Among the shops that can find this oil, we have the following:
- Shop specialising in olive oil. We find that these oils cannot be missing in a good shop specialising in olive oils. For this reason, in our shop in Madrid you can find this variety of Granada.
- On the Internet. These olive oils are available on dozens of websites.
Finally, it is very unlikely that they will be found abroad.
