1. Worldwide problem

Some 1.4 billion people are obese or overweight in the world. These figures are double those of 1980, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Furthermore, in 2013, more than 42 million young children under the age of five were overweight. Creating the paradox that more people in the world are dying from poor and excessive nutrition than from malnutrition. This is why slimming therapies are becoming an obligation in these countries.

According to José Miranda, from the Biomedical Research Centre Network for Obesity and Nutrition (Ciberobn): Obesity is a bigger problem than smoking, as tobacco consumption is decreasing, while the number of obese and overweight people is increasing, as a consequence of our worsening unhealthy diet and lifestyle.

Sedentary lifestyles, together with the ignorance or comfort of not appreciating and knowing how to eat well, maintaining a balanced diet and an unhealthy way of life. All this is causing an unstoppable growth of the disease of obesity and overweight.

This disease of obesity is related to many other diseases such as:

  • cardiovascular diseases
  • diabetes
  • osteoarthritis
  • some cancers, such as breast, endometrial and colon cancer.

2. Natural weight loss tips

Obesity is a preventable disease, which can be avoided by following the advice of the World Health Organization (WHO):

  • Avoid high-calorie foods rich in fats, salt, sugars and low in nutrients, vitamins and minerals.
  • Follow a Mediterranean diet rich in vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, dried fruits and extra virgin olive oil.
  • Exercise regularly and routinely, not binge eating.

According to Dr Antonio Escribano, a specialist in Endocrinology and Nutrition and Physical Education and Sports Medicine: the important thing is to exercise regularly, not to binge eat one day and do nothing the rest of the week.

If we follow all these guidelines, we will not feel good inside and out. Besides, health is the most important thing we have, which is not really appreciated until it is lost.

3. Why don’t the tricks to lose weight quickly and healthily work?

If we base ourselves on the principles of Darwinian medicine, from its evolutionary point of view. Man millions of years ago was adapted to a very hostile environment. In this world food was scarce and he could go for days without food. Such circumstances caused his genes to evolve and mutate. As a result, they favoured the accumulation of energy (fat) in periods of abundance and energy saving in periods of scarcity. This set of genes has been called the thrifty genotype.

With the discovery of agriculture and animal husbandry 15 000 years ago, the thrifty genotype was no longer as necessary for survival. It began to be diluted over the generations. The problem is that today we live in a society with a sedentary lifestyle and overnourished conditions. Moreover, many people still maintain this thrifty genotype, which was essential for survival in the past. However, it is currently turning people into obese people, who find it very difficult to lose weight, despite a low-calorie diet and exercise.

Another factor that explains why some people do not manage to lose weight, regardless of whether they follow a low-calorie diet and do moderate exercise regularly, is due to their intestinal flora.

According to numerous studies carried out by different health institutions and published in the journal Nature, they have shown that intestinal flora plays a fundamental role in controlling a person’s body weight. A gut flora with a high diversity of bacteria makes it easier to control weight than a gut flora with a low presence of bacteria.

4. For children: Slimming tips

In order to get children to lose weight, it is essential to focus on two goals; first, to get them to exercise more; and second, to eat a balanced diet.

Children need to stop doing so much sedentary activity and replace it with physical exercise. In this way, parents should take them to extracurricular activities, and take them out into the countryside or the street. In other words, start to control the use of computer games and mobile phones.

The other point we have mentioned is food. Children are brought up in a consumerist society where they receive advertisements all day long for precooked and unhealthy food. You, the parents, must educate them so that they eat properly and only eat this more industrial food from time to time.

In conclusion, children will copy and follow the trends they see around them. That is why it is so important for parents to be very attentive to their children and their diet.

5. My experience

With the first wave of the coronavirus, I put on a few extra kilos again, almost reaching 89. When I saw that I was a bit fat and did my calculations that if I continued like this, I would gain one kilo per year. The calculations told me that when I passed 40, I was going to have a big belly to go with it.

So I couldn’t go on like that, and I had to do something about it. My experience is that it is better to cut down on small measures than to take small measures, which in the end you break them and forget them. My decision was clear, apart from exercising and following an active life, I had to eat less.

This is where I focused the most, eating less. To do this, I set myself some limits, to continue eating healthily, but only as much as I could fit on a plate. I couldn’t repeat myself and have a first and a second. Everything I ate had to fit on a plate.

That’s what I did, and little by little I gradually lost kilos until I reached around 80. Now I’m back to the routine, to the daily grind, and this is hard to maintain, but I’ll try to keep it up.
