However, yet another alternative has emerged, the air fryer or oil-free fryer. These fryers do not use oil and are not really fryers at all, but are small ovens as they cook the food with hot air. All these fryers had a very small market, but with long advertising campaigns, they are spreading in families. As a result, the consumption of olive oil is growing less and less.

1. How does an air fryer work?

Air fryers are not really fryers, as they are actually small convention ovens. Their way of cooking food is based on circulating very hot air at high speed over the food. In some cases, it uses a little oil, in others no oil at all.

The expansion of this fryer is increasing, and it is widely used to cook potatoes, chicken, fish and vegetables. It is also used for defrosting food.

The result of cooking with this fryer is very positive from the point of view of results. It leaves the food very crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.

2. Are air fryers healthier than traditional fryers?

The companies that sell these fryers talk about their great advantages, claiming that they are healthier and consume less energy. Likewise, on social networks we constantly find videos repeating the fantastic benefits of these fryers. However, let’s take a closer look at these two points; they are healthier and the consumption of these fryers.

a) Consumption

The consumption of air fryers varies according to their size, power and price. Therefore, we have models ranging from 700 W, the smallest and most basic, to 2,000 W, which is what they usually consume. Likewise, their capacity ranges from six litres to 70 litres. In comparison with conventional ovens, which usually consume between 2,000 and 5,000 W. However, these have a larger capacity and take a little longer to heat up their entire cubicle. Likewise, conventional deep fryers have a consumption of around 2,000W.

Therefore, their consumption is not so low compared to the useful volumes.

b) Advantages for the food

The instructions for air fryers indicate the need to place a film of oil on the grid. It is also necessary to cover the raw food with a film of oil so that it does not stick to the inside of the fryer. This can be done with a brush or spray. Therefore, the amount of oil used is much smaller. However, there is no point in consuming less oil and then using the fryer to cook convenience food.

3. Upward trend

With the current rise in olive oil prices in 2023, which have doubled this year compared to other years, it is to be expected that these fryers will be in high demand. This is the case from what is seen and heard from customers. Also, customers indicate that it is not the same as frying and that some products with this air fryer come out better or worse.
